Labour are now more explicitly admitting that they are not seeking real changes to the backstop but to the political declaration on our future relationship (rather than our divorce)

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/
"This could be mitigated by changes to the backstop itself," she wrote to @eucopresident & @JunckerEU "Proposals for a way in which the UK could choose to exit the backstop unilaterally were it ever to come into force, or for a hard time limit... 2/
on the duration of the usage of the backstop, have been raised and discussed in Parliament. We have also raised them previously in negotiations." So there are her proposals, i.e. the EU should basically just cave on backstop in face of House of Commons defeat. But but but ... 3/

I've always had a dislike for the uncanny, for the middle ground--this is why I like top 40 & noise music, but hate alt rock, why I like classical instrumentation & synthesizers, but not bullshit like metal that uses symphonic elements.
It's why I find reading explicit fascists, conservatives & reactionaries (Schmitt, Strauss, Oakeshott, Gray, Benoist, etc) easier than reading gormless mealy mouthed middle ground cryptos, even as I despise what the explicits say.
I know A LOT of people who are like this actually, in academia, the arts, and activism, but it always admittedly runs the risk of prioritizing the critique of liberalism over the success of leftism, and it's one reason why you get Red-Brown alliances.

That really compelling story with the ending that moves you which really drives home that old white guy’s point? Fiction.

And note, I say this as a person who loves good anecdotes - that is to say, a bullshitter. There is art and value in these stories! But that is in the *telling*, less so in the re-telling.

Using other people’s anecdotes risks fooling yourself.
