In particular, Dan claims that the Hillary Clinton campaign was behind a Glen Simpson WSJ report that linked John McCain to Oleg Deripaska.

The article was revised in May 2008. The original publication date, however, was April 2007.
I doubt the Hillary campaign was concerned about a potential GOP candidate at that point.
Even if Hillary was looking ahead, this Time poll from early 2007 suggests that Rudy Giuliani would have been her toughest opponent in the general election.
