Final mini-thread of the weekend. [1] Let's imagine that its 2025. The UK has left the EU, and has a basic FTA with the EU. Jacob Rees Mogg is walking down the street when he meets Constituent #1. This constituent is angry.
/ "Why are you unhappy my plebeian chum?" asks JRM. The constituent answers that the company he works for has just gone bust, and that they were wiped out by competition from a German firm that makes similar products. He asks why the government can't just block German imports.
/ JRM answers "well my good man, the fact of the matter is, we have signed a Free Trade agreement with the EU, and as a result we can't simply impose quotas or tariffs on German goods, or they could reciprocate".
/ The constituent is extremely angry at this. "When we had that referendum mate, there was nothing on the ballot paper that said anything about a free trade agreement, it just said leave or remain - what part of that didn't you understand??"
/ JRM's face turns serious. "The people voted to leave yes, but Her Majesty's government had to pursue what it believed to be the best option for the UK as a whole. You personally might have wanted no-deal, but a responsible government has to govern for all".
/ Another person (Constituent #2) appears, saying "I'm sorry to eavesdrop but I couldn't help overhearing your conversation. I voted for a soft brexit, and the government didn't seem to listen to me or anyone with similar views?" JRM adjusts his specs...
/ JRM replies "well, that wouldn't have been real brexit you see." Constituent #2: "but we would have been out of the EU?" JRM: "Technically yes, but they could still have told us what we can and can't do" Constituent #1: "but you said you can't ban eu imports to save my job?"
/ JRM (Flustered) "My good fellows *any* agreement we entered into would have meant some level of compromise." Constituent 1: "we didn't vote for compromise, we voted to leave, you quisling. How much are the EU paying you?"
/ JRM: "Let me be clear - we had to leave the EU because that was the will of the british people." Constituent #1 "but i'm a leaver and I wanted a wto brexit. Remember how we chanted no deal, no problem? So why did you sign this traitorous FTA?"
/ JRM: "because ultimately, MPs have to make decisions not simply based on the changeable whims of the public, but are answerable to their own consciences and good judgements. Now if you will excuse me, I have a lot to think about..." /End
