A universalist is someone who believes the values of his own tribe apply to everyone on earth.
I find it odd that universalists are always accusing nationalists of arrogance, of thinking too highly of their own culture and traditions. No one thinks more highly of their own cuture and traditions than universalists.
And universalists are always accusing nationalists of hatred toward those who disagree with them. No one hates those who disagree with them more than universalists.
I don’t mean all universalists, of course. There’s good and bad on both sides.
Still, I’m trying to think of a single accusation that universalists commonly throw at nationalists and particularists that isn’t just as true—or more so—of universalist ideologies and their true believers.
When people think they know the final answers as to how everyone else should behave and think, it’s just really hard for them not to become unpleasant about it.
