Quick thread on International Holocaust Remembrance Day and Yom HaShoah. These are two different holidays. One's an international, universal one, and one's specifically a Jewish day of remembrance. 1/x
I've noticed a lot of responses to people talking about the 6 million Jews murdered during the Shoah with "the total death toll was closer to 15 million." And that's true! And it's important to remember ALL the victims, not just Jews. 2/x
Especially since people tend to automatically associate "Holocaust" with "Jews" and forget the Roma, the LGBT people, disabled people, resistance fighters, and others who were sent to camps, tortured, and murdered. 3/x
International Holocaust Day (January 27) is a very appropriate day to ensure that those people are remembered, honored, and memorialized. 4/x
Yom HaShoah (27th of Nisan) is specifically a Jewish day of remembrance. There likely won't be stuff on the news or thinkpieces in papers about it. It's largely an internal-to-the-Jewish-community observance. 5/x
So, on that particular Jewish day of remembrance dedicated to a community specifically memorializing its own dead, please don't barge into conversations about it with BUT WHAT ABOUT EVERYONE *ELSE* THE NAZIS MURDERED? Because you are basically #alllivesmatter-ing the Shoah.
I saw it happen a ton last year and it was gross. International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a worldwide day for remembering all the victims of the Holocaust. Yom HaShoah is a specifically Jewish observance for remembering Jewish victims.
Please note and respect the distinction. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
