I've been thinking big thoughts today about how we can manage to improve trust in our government - not just by increasing transparency, but by building up the role of government as a platform for civic participation.
I've already touched on some of these ideas here...
And starting the engagement young - like here, a similar concept to allow students to participate in legislation.
Or even something that allows students to participate in the legislative process directly, even if it's a shadow legislative body.
To restore trust in government, which we're going to need in the near future, it's time that we demand Congress goes beyond the status quo and launches a permanent committee targeted at improve the potential for civic engagement in democracy.
Think of it as a citizen user experience team for government - along with their staff, overseeing, evaluating & facilitating experiments in democracy, sourced from the people they govern.

Creating a direct path for input + ideation to give us a more direct voice.
To let each of us invest in our democracy with more than just taxes or political participation - to take advantage of our diversity of experience and our ideas.
To increase transparency -

To let us see who is actually behind crafting the legislation that's passed...

To give every citizen the same access to contributing as K Street lobbyists...
To make accessible to every citizen a clear understanding of the law and the history of how it changes over time
To ensure elected officials can be held accountable should any future allegations suggest legislation was crafted for self-profit, as an abuse of power.
To give credit where it's due, to both the legislators and citizens who make significant contributions to building a better, more equitable, more prosperous nation.
To provide oversight and obviate the loopholes that let certain actors manipulate the system and undermine our national prosperity and security for personal profit.
To give every one of us a direct stake in our own future.
Those are my big picture thoughts, anyway.

What do you think?
p.s. just saw something similar in concept, but VERY different in implementation here - opengov.ideascale.com

This needs to be a permanent path to engagement. Not just something that runs for a single week.
