I finally gave my email address on a Square purchase after opting out of receipts for years and within 24 hours a merchant that I'd visited once, *a week earlier*, emailed me asking for more personal info. That all feels incredibly gross, @Square
Every tech company juicing its numbers has willfully conflated providing information necessary for a transaction with consenting to the unlimited use of that information, and I hate it
Not only is that conflation bad for my inbox (whatever, I can manage), but it's actively bad for society! It's the same fundamental misunderstanding, in the form of the grossly distended "third-party doctrine" of the law, that's responsible for massive invasions of privacy
