Interesting debate. Real problem is that Germany fails to define its own role and goals. It looks for others to provide security and strategic leadership.
Under Trump, US refuses to play this role for Germany. Slightly panicked, Germany looks for France to replace the US which is of course impossible. Germany needs to figure out itself a strategy and must provide the means for it.
That sounds like a no-brainer but is, in practice, a huge step towards self-sustainability requiring a rethink of German identity on many levels — a country that for decades has focused largely on internal social-economic issues.
