"Educational" video created by Saudi anti-extremism directorate equates young women fleeing domestic abuse with young men joining terror groups. The reason of course is foreign countries targeting the nation.
This isn't a new trend. Saudi authorities adopt a very broad definition of what is considered "terrorism". In 2014, for example, @LoujainHathloul defied the then-driving ban. She was brought before anti-terrorism court. abc.net.au/news/2014-12-2…
@LoujainHathloul Before that incident - earlier in 2014 - Saudi authorities had redefined terrorism to mean "anything socially disruptive". They considered atheism socially disruptive. Hence it fell under their definition of terrorism. independent.co.uk/news/world/mid…

I take friendship very seriously. There are disagreements in positions, and then there's disagreements in fundamental values. I'll *never* call someone who fails to condemn systematic war crimes a friend, neither are they worth my friendship.
As the Arabic proverb says, "if you want to know the man, ask about the reputation of his friends".

I'm a Palestinian. Not American-Palestinian, not British-Palestinian - I'm a stateless Palestinian refugee. I know very well that allies are few and far between. I know very well how entrenched and deep-pocketed the opponents of our rights are.
I also know the history of my struggle deeply. It's the history of my family after all. I know the history of our trauma. I also know that we haven't been lucky with our leaders or with our allies, and that those who led our movement have made some disastrous choices in the past.
And because I understand this context completely, I absolutely reject Assadists, far-left fascists, war crimes deniers, antisemites, and the other deplorables who may pose as friends and allies of our cause, but eventually gain more out of our cause than they benefit it.

The detained feminists and women’s rights activist are leaders of a social revolution that terrifies the #Saudi monarchy When this decade began, there was no political revolution in Saudi Arabia like those in Tunisia, Egypt and other countries of the “Arab Spring.” But a social revolution has begun now in Saudi Arabia.<br /> <br /> Its vanguard is not a crown prince who claims to be an emancipator of women. How did the #Saudi embassy know the sisters had applied for aayuum?
Whoever told the #Saudi embassy that Rotana and Tala has applied for asylum jeopardized their lives. There is a reason - a danger they are escaping - that someone applies for asylum. When you tell the embassy of their country of origin, you further endanger them.

May be a good time to remind people that asylum seekers must demonstrate persecution or the legitimate fear of persecution for one of the following reasons: race; religion; nationality; political opinion; or membership in a particular social group.
Fleeing domestic abuse or gang violence is as valid a reason to leave a country as any, but it doesn't qualify anyone for asylum. Neither does "seeking a better life for your family." That's neither a value judgment nor an opinion - it's an objective fact that goes unreported.
It's equally factual to note that we have an embassy and nine consulates in Mexico, all of which are fully capable of processing asylum and refugee applications. Bypassing these facilities to bring one's family across the border illegally is a choice.
