[Thread] Based on recent discussions with @SamuelSokol, @TarikCyrilAmar, and @AuschwitzMuseum over the continued debates regarding the "naming" of concentration camps in Poland, I've decided it's time for a thread, b/c this is not about history but the present in Poland.
What has many Poles (and state-run museums) up in arms, is ANY connection of the word "Poland" with Holocaust sites (and more broadly behavior- hence the "correction" above.) They particularly rail against the term "Polish" death or concentration camps. edition.cnn.com/2018/02/01/eur…
The argument is that Poles did not establish or run these camps...which is absolutely correct. But the problem is, no one really thinks Poles built Auschwitz, etc. Sure, there are ignorant people out there or some students, but I defy you to find a scholar making this argument.

Now there's a huge gaping fucking hole in the fence around our online banking for anyone (not just Fuckwit Policeman #1) to gain access to our bank accounts.
Here's another one: some bright spark is inevitably going to ask Apple to make a back door into their iPhones.

The Australian government has released the draft Assistance and Access Bill 2018, legislation intended to help law enforcement agencies bypass encrypted communications. homeaffairs.gov.au/about/consulta… I’ll live-tweet my reading of it in this thread. #aabill
The Bill is a messy 176 pages, because it amends a bunch of Acts. The Explanatory Document is 110 pages. There’s also an Industry Fact Sheet, a document about Limitations and Safeguards, and three documents about how the search warrants will work. Much joyous reading! #aabill
I’ll start with the Explanatory Document, because it explains (der!) what the legislation is meant to do, and points to the relevant bits in the Bill. It’s also less likely to make my brain explode. #aabill

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

For those that might be interested, I wanted to give a short personal story about Microsoft and open source (and yes, GitHub is in there, too).

I joined Microsoft in 2012 to work on a little project that would make writing JavaScript a bit easier.
At the time, @typescriptlang had maybe 3 internal customers and wasn't yet public. The Microsoft of then looked a bit different, especially re: open source. There were only a handful of teams running on-going open source efforts, the asp.net team being one.
was presented with the plan for TypeScript: let's take it open source, where the developers are, and grow a community with it. It was a small project, but it had some potential.

Satya, to his credit (I was told, I wasn't there), was well-aware and supportive.
