Might as well do a thread on Sergei Millian since he's back in the news. He's alleged to be "Source D" and "Source E" in the Steele dossier. But lots of reasons to doubt that he was a reliable source washingtonpost.com/politics/serge…
"Source D" claimed he was present in Moscow when Trump engaged in the golden showers incident. Millian has since claimed (take it for what it's worth) that he wasn't in Moscow at the time or with Trump.
Millian started showing up as the focus of news stories in July 2016. ABC News interviewed him on July 29, 2016 (two days before Crossfire Hurricane started). It wasn't a coincidence. Up until then, Millian had given one interview to a Russian outlet claiming ties to Trump.
Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson told ABC's Brian Ross about Millian. That despite Simpson having reservations about Millian (per "Russian Roulette). Millian then all of a sudden started popping up in news articles, such as: thedailybeast.com/meet-the-man-w…
I don't know Fusion's specific strategy, but they probably wanted to tie the Trump campaign to mysterious people with ties to Russia (Millian is Belarusian but had training in Russia). By flooding the media w/ stories about Millian, Fusion made it seem like there was there there
Millian was up to something, exactly what is a mystery. On July 22, 2016, he first contacts George Papadopoulos. They meet days later, as we've reported. This is before the ABC interview and the opening of Crossfire Hurricane.
Papadopoulos is not mentioned in the dossier, but it's entirely possible that Millian unwittingly relayed info from his meeting w/ Papadopoulos to Christopher Steele's intermediary.
This is what "Source E" aka Millian told Steele's middleman:
*If* Millian relayed information from Papadopoulos, it's a game of telephone that originated with information shared over drinks. This is where Millian's reputation as an embellisher becomes especially important.
