I think we have learnt a lot about the PM's approach to Brexit this week - it is her deal, she has no great interest in changing any of it, and will go to the last week if necessary to get it through Parliament - my latest analysis linkedin.com/pulse/pm-going…
As @TomMcTague reports similarly, Conservatives who oppose no-deal in the Cabinet are unsure what to do about this situation, but are unlikely to make any moves this month politico.eu/article/theres…
And so we wait, business counts the cost, individuals continue to worry, and party tensions rise. Even if the PM eventually gets her way there will be a price to pay in the form of an unloved deal. But it is hard to see any realistic alternatives emerging.

As ever your Brexit Saturday morning read comes from @tconnellyRTE - which I think captures well the sense of the search for a solution to the negotiating impasse that is simultaneously something and non something substantial - though couple of points to add...
On the existing models / UK is different argument, something for both EU and UK to think about. More detail from me in the next couple of weeks, but just on financial services there are very good reasons for finding a new way - as this letter hinted ft.com/content/716135…
But the big issue overshadowing this - how many Conservative MPs can never agree to any variant of the PMs deal as it will prevent a trade agreement with the US? More on this later...

According to this evidence submitted to the US Government the UK-EU economic relationship must be secondary to the UK-US relationship
This evidence was submitted by Shanker Singham of the IEA, whose plan for a future UK-EU relationship also sits at the core of the Malthouse compromise (h/t @vickihird) regulations.gov/document?D=UST…
So, to be entirely clear, according to this view, the UK must drop protections on Geographical Indications (including those from the UK like Cornish Pasty) and food standards (allow the famous chlorinated chicken) as these US interests must be put first

A constant refrain from my fellow remainers is name be a #Brexit benefit many devote immense energy writing detailed explanations of trade tarrifs or how the EU works. I am grateful to them as I have learned a lot from them yet we all wonder why it makes so little difference
It seems to me that a better question to leavers is what are you getting out of #Brexit why do you support it in the face of so much evidence that its a terrible idea and I would like to suggest the answer lies in the realms of feeling
We have all seen that #Brexit licenses all kinds of opinions that 1l0 years ago would have been unacceptable but more than that it licences BEHAVIOURS that usually are unacceptable and thus gives many adherents a immense pleasure

1) Corbyn reality check
I'll admit I've never been a Corbyn fan, my personal low point was actually the Sky TV special he did just before the Ref

I actually hoped he'd push a pro EU line but instead, he spent more time on rail nationalisation than the EU, it was very depressing
2) the follow up with "we must trigger article 50 immediately" was shocking in itself but it was also the first time I saw Corbyn supporters pushing a "but what he meant was.." to any significant degree. That's the moment I suppose people really got entrenched either side
3) and its easy to understand why Corbyn's supporters feel under siege with the constant attacks.

But as we approach a cliff edge #Brexit in 100 days & Corbyn's limitations are helping to get us there, perhaps its time for a retrospective - maybe everyone was right?

1) While all versions of #Brexit under the sun are being thought about in Parliament there’s no whiff of the EU changing its position
2) EU member states are not (yet) discussing the possibility of a second referendum or an extension of article 50 negotiating time amongst themselves
3) Regardless of the result of the vote in parliament on 11th, the EU is adamant the deal on the table is the best compromise for both sides - they say they can and will go no further

1. So if reports are correct it looks like Mrs May is going to go with a customs union as her next move along with those rules necessary to keep the trucks rolling. No doubt this is going to upset the #Brexit Taliban. (thread)
2. As ever she's got it ass backwards where the the differences then between NI and mainland will be more profound than if we'd stayed in the EEA and ditched the customs union. This is what happens when you equate customs controls with customs unions.
3. So the plan, if we can call it a plan is a Turkey Plus sort of arrangement - or maybe the Jersey Option. Whatever ti is, it certainly is turkey - but it's bordering on workable which is closer than we've been before. It will probably fall over on the details.

1) Thread - Corbyn, #Brexit & Labour democracy - let's just be honest, it's dead

Saddened but not surprised by this reversal by Labour Leadership.

Labour members overwhelmingly support a People's vote, and they have been comprehensively overridden

2) so, full disclosure, I'm not a Corbyn fan but I was absolutely prepared to "lay down arms" if something approaching a pro people's vote motion came out of last night's horsetrading. It didn't. A fudge came out, and that fudge was hardened into a pro brexit position
3) so what happened, and what does it mean? Quick summary
Well, clearly there is a growing pro remain/people's vote position in Labour - 9 out of 10 members support it & 150 CLPs sent in pro vote motions.

That's a staggering number and shows the concern of members
