According to this evidence submitted to the US Government the UK-EU economic relationship must be secondary to the UK-US relationship
This evidence was submitted by Shanker Singham of the IEA, whose plan for a future UK-EU relationship also sits at the core of the Malthouse compromise (h/t @vickihird) regulations.gov/document?D=UST…
So, to be entirely clear, according to this view, the UK must drop protections on Geographical Indications (including those from the UK like Cornish Pasty) and food standards (allow the famous chlorinated chicken) as these US interests must be put first
This does leave at least one prominent Brexiteer in a particularly awkward position - Michael Gove has promised that the UK will not change food standards to US levels theguardian.com/politics/2017/…
We should though be grateful for the clarity that this evidence brings - that large parts of the argument over the Irish backstop are unrelated to Ireland, and a lot to do with the US. Which is unlikely to increase EU sympathies for the UK position /end
