Wondering if injecting CO2 into the ground to get more CO2 (in the form of oil) out of the ground actually reduces net emissions? @cleanaircatf analysis says yes: every barrel of oil produced using CO2 injection for "enhanced oil recovery" reduces CO2 by about 37%.
There's no doubt variation around that precise number, given the different carbon intensities of different sources of oil that may be produced & displaced by CO2 for EOR. Something @DxGordon can probably comment on. But nice to have a ballpark figure from @cleanaircatf.

Today, @AOC & @EdMarkey released a Congressional Resolution calling for a #GreenNewDeal, "a 10-year plan to mobilize every aspect of American society at a scale not seen since World War 2 to achieve net-zero greenhouse emissions and create economic prosperity for all." My take...

I commend @AOC, @EdMarkey & #GreenNewDeal co-sponsors for putting the urgent need to confront #climatechange with an ambitious clean energy mobilization on the top of the political agenda. This is an urgent threat. Confronting it is a real opportunity for economic renewal.

Strongly disagree with this statement that energy models have *declining* policy usefulness in context of rapid technological change. In fact, when used appropriately, energy models should have *increased* relevance in this context (just not the way @EIAgov uses NEMS) 1/
The EIA uses their models to create "projections" which are often misinterpreted as "predictions." They are efforts to say what the future "will be" (prediction) or "is likely to be" (projection). 2/
Using a model for these purposes depends on your ability to very accurately characterize the underlying techno-economic dynamics AND the probabilities of changes in key parameters. When it comes to our rapidly changing energy sector, both of these break down. 3/

THREAD| Draft of the #Climate Change Act, presented by (@bmu) this week: The proposal is a framework law, featuring elements from international acts, e.g. from UK (@theCCCuk). In contrast to the German Climate Action Plan 2050, it will be legally binding. #Klimaschutzgesetz
2| The framework law includes emission reduction targets, defines CO2 budgets for each sector, and clarifies responsibilities, as well as review, transparency & sanctioning mechanisms. Implementation measures for each sector will be detailled in 2030 programmes, due in Mar 2019.
3| Progress will be supported by an independent advisory group of 7 experts. Focus is on reaching the 2030 CO2 reduction targets, but the draft works towards at least 95% reduction by 2050. The remaining 5% to reach #netzero could be reached through compensation policies.

As I replied to @EricHolthaus- I'm aware of and inspired by @givingwhatwecan & @GiveWell work on global health/poverty; I personally want to support climate mitigation. I realize there's no one right answer, depends on theory of change etc; curious to hear different perspectives.
Esp. in climate arena where impact could be on different possible levels (eg X tons avoided from cookstoves vs Y tons #fossil CO2 kept in the ground vs systemic political or economic change)- curious to hear diverse range of theory of change or evidence of effectiveness.

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

This moment in the @karaswisher Zuck interview was something else. Thiel, Bannon and Mercers most certainly have ideological relationships. And a little due diligence would’ve turned up CA as part of SCL which had very troubling press coverage a click away recode.net/2018/7/18/1757…
Fraudulent Certification of data deletion was from SCL not Cambridge Analytica. Facebook failed to do a simple search to find an article from 2005 exposing what they were actually dealing with. They didn’t do due diligence. slate.com/articles/news_…
As for Thiel, Bannon, Mercer being same kind of dark triad, well this was also covered in the press, so Zuck is being disingenuous at best. His deference to Thiel as first investor will always plague Facebook. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
