In the anti-vaccination crowd there is an incorrect idea derived from a misunderstanding that having the actual disease makes the immune system stronger and is better overall. This couldn’t be further from the truth...modern epidemic diseases can have wide-ranging bad effects.

There are tons of other effects of modern epidemic diseases we don’t know. In this sample (not as robust as the other data I’ve mentioned), having influenza B is correlated with increased risk of suicide and psychosis in patients with mood disorders. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
How does this fit in with the so-called hygiene hypothesis? Well, the hygiene hypothesis more complicated than it sounds, and the bacteria and parasites that help positively tune the immune system to prevent autoimmune disease aren’t the same bugs as modern epidemic diseases.
The two most important medical interventions in the last 200 years are the development of good hygiene practices and effective vaccines. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water in a misguided attempt at naturalism.
