This. So many tears, so much pain, over this question.

Pastors, where were you? When we were pleading for you to speak up against your peers or the leaders your support props up, where were you?
You wanted to be "together for the gospel", and be at conferences and sell books and preach at each other's churches - all the benefits. But when that co-laboror did something terrible, you hid behind church autonomy. All the benefits of coalition, none of the responsibility.
For some things, you would have broken that co-laborer relationship. But not for allegations of covering up sexual assault. So be honest, it wasn't really church autonomy that kept you silent, was it?
And many times, it wasn't malice either. It just wasn't important enough. Sexual assault, or covering it up, didn't rank high enough to consider investigating, rebuking, asking hard questions. Other things did, but not this.
It was so much easier to become defensive, to complain about the messenger's tone or attitude, or theological differences, as if those outranked rape and child abuse, or changed the facts they reported.

Where were you all these years, when you had the authority to save so many?
And are you now going to go back to those people that you accused of making things up, causing division, bringing false charges, or whom you talked about derisively and repent for not listening? Because humility would require that.
