New no deal Brexit guidance for the space sector is stark: "UK-based businesses, academics and researchers will not be able to bid for future work on EU space programmes." Nothing equivocal about that. Bang, that's a massive market gone, just like that.

Interesting how much more blunt the latest publication is than the much longer one published on 13 September 2018. Looks like the Government is tired of beating around the bush.

The UK space sector was estimated at £13.7 billion turnover for 2014/2015 in the pathetically inadequate "sectoral analysis" cobbled together towards the beginning of the Brexit process. It also provides over 38,500 jobs.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if the Tory and Labour parties threw off the 80-ish most extreme MPs on each side, and merged into a Party of National Unity with a giant super-majority? It could then cancel Brexit, HS2 & Trident, and throw £100s of billions at hypercharging the economy.
Green electricity, smart cities, truly robust railways, Hyperloop, you name it. By slaying all 3 white elephants at once, there would be masses of funding to do all sorts of great things, and we could always borrow more and invest it wisely for a better future.
It could agree to stay together for two election cycles (ie ten years) and repair the damage from over half a century of neglect has inflicted on vital infrastructure, poorer regions, our housing stock, etc. Its final act would be to bring in proportional representation.

Main Government Brexit motion defeated by 258 to 303. More egg on face for Theresa May, who's now sporting an entire beard omelette. Gleeful cheers in the HOC, and even some loud laughter. Her credibility is blown to smithereens.
Jeremy Corbyn rightly calls her out for not even bothering to be in the Chamber to hear the result. No doubt she'd read the tea leaves and is now hiding away in a bunker somewhere, scraping mould off jam...
John Bercow gave the Brexit Secretary and his front-bench colleagues ample chance to reply to JC's point of order. All of them looked at their shoes and declined.

EU defense contractors will no longer have an automatic right to bid on defense and security contracts after 29 March under a no-deal Brexit. But all this stuff is tit-for-tat, so we can expect the door to slam on UK firms' participation in EU procurement.

Currently, we're the world's second largest defense exporter, and Europe's largest. But what will happen once we find our access to the EU market severely curtailed?

As for the £7 billion/year security market, half our exports currently go to Europe. Again, something that is likely to be dramatically affected once we're no longer on the inside for procurement contracts.

1. All the solutions to the various technical #Brexit concerns are to an extent sub-optimal, complicated and require a degree of compromise. Tories, though, would rather queue up round the block to be told life is simpler than it is.

2. Anyone can blether about sovereignty and self-determination but in the real world, regulation and rules are the WD40 of trade and without agreed norms trade simply doesn't happen. All trade agreements to one extend or other place constraints on sovereignty.
3. Brexit requires of us that we seek a balance between isolationism and subordination but since the EU is the regional and global regulatory superpower in this equation, to a larger extent it will call the shots. This is a simple fact of life. They are bigger than us.

On a skim, common themes are:
- Red tape (more of it);
- Increased price or trouble for most of us.

But don't worry. Blue passports late 2019. And the PM said it's not the end of the world.
