@ezraklein @ebruenig The question of why people support the things they do, and how much identity influences ideology, is depressing in a way (as you can barely convince anyone of anything) but also so helpful to figure out strategies.
Liberal vs leftist point - about 'socialism' and how it manifests, is interesting. It's so relative. An idea which in the USA would be seen as socialist, universal public healthcare, is something which many people in UK who would never call themselves socialist strongly support
At least from evidence on Twitter, being a 'socialist' in today's politics is often as much about identity as it is about ideology. Not saying it's an empty concept, but it has an element of team sports which is nothing to do with socialist ideals. Same with being a 'capitalist'
