I'm at the DNC credentials committee meeting in Washington, where there is a challenge to the legitimacy of the Alabama Democratic Party Chair's election. Here's a backgrounder. al.com/news/2019/01/d…
I've spotted @DougJones at this meeting challenging the Alabama Democratic Party chair's legitimacy. He's been a vocal opponent of her (lack of) leadership.
This meeting, like the Alabama Democratic Party, has fallen off the rails. There's confusion on how many actually were eligible to vote at the chair election. The DNC investigator is being grilled by the credentials chair. And it isn't going well.
Ralph Young, a gay Democrat, blasts Alabama Democratic Party leadership. He says the chair ignores underrepresented groups. He notes 3-1 men to women leadership discrepancy.
The chair's lawyer reminds me of Matlock. His claims are all over the place. But my God he is entertaining.
Recess commences before we begin and the questioning portion. This meeting will likely last for hours.
Unless I’m misreading the room, I think there’s a substantial chance the Alabama Democratic Party chair will be removed today by the Democratic National Committee Credentials Committee.
The chairwoman of the Alabama Democratic Party Nancy Worley is about to testify in her own defense for five minutes. She'll be followed by Doug Jones, who will testify against her. This will be pivotal.
Chairwoman Worley has gone AWOL. We've been waiting for her to speak for about five minutes, but she's nowhere to be found.
Worley: "I'm committed to affirmative action. I served people of all backgrounds. I was proud to be elected as first woman chair. Not that I was the best candidate, but because it's time for women to lead this party."
Senator Jones rebuts Worley's leadership: "This isn't about Dr. Reed's leadership. This isn't about Ms. Worley being the first woman in charge. It's time for a change. We need a broad party. Our party is broken. The party isn't just about diversity. It's about inclusion."
Doug Jones: Nancy Worley's election is a total sham.
Doug Jones: The minority caucus in Alabama is only African-American. It doesn't include anyone else.
We’re going through the question and answer portion right now. This is heated. The basic allegation is that Dr. Reed stacked the Executive Committee in favor of Worley can pull the strings.
Here’s the clear bottomline: the Alabama Democratic Party is a total shitshow. The question at stake is it corrupt to such a degree that Nancy Worley’s election is illegitimate. The Alabama Democratic Party is less functional than Venezuela.
The Democratic National Committee Credentials Committee is voting on a resolution to call for a new election within 90 days. The election would be monitored by the Democratic National Committee. Nancy Worley would remain in office before the election commences.
By a vote 12-11, an amendment passed to allow Worley to remain in her job before a new election commences.
And the resolution passes as amended and will be presented to the full Democratic National Committee for a vote.
Barring a miracle, on Saturday, the Democratic National Committee will call for a new election for the Alabama Democratic Party chair and other leadership positions. The election must take place by May 17th, and it'll be supervised by the DNC. This is a huge win for @DougJones.
