i love the new troubleshooting process at work
- get ticket on system i've heard of once, three months ago, referencing system component i've never heard of
- search email for any way to log into that system, or even a URL; none
- look for system owner
- find reference that Bradley Fartwinkle is on that legacy team
- he's a VP in outlook
[ ENTER "CRISIS" DIAMOND ON FLOWCHART ]
A) does he still work here or did he quit to escape the sinking ship
B) if he still works here, will emailing him be a gaffe
- check ORGANIZATION tab in Outlook
- oops; they merged email systems and we weren't the acquiring company so we're now second-class, meaning they broke our entire hierarchy in Exchange and will never, ever, ever fix it because nobody knows how to do that
- Final Stage: hot potato and you got it bud! pass it! pass it! oh you're alone and the entire building is empty guess you just get to keep that one
[ QUESTION QORNER ]
Q: Why not just email the VP?
A: My entire company is full of terrified cowards and dipshit execs and you never know who you're supposed to be hiding procedural failures from.
Q: What could be bad about someone asking for help?
A: The person I asked won't care, but someone else who thinks they have a stake in the situation will find out inevitably and get upset that I let someone know that my team doesn't know how to do this
Q: What is this cloak and dagger horseshit, is this all taking place in a medieval YA novel full of commentary on bureaucracy
A: Normal, and yes
