It's extremely damaging to keep pretending the Republican Party didn't already make this choice decades ago.

Correct me historians but I’d guess the civil rights movement. Once the rule of law was expanded to specifically cover people of color, there was a huge market to dismantle that rule of law, and the Republicans chose to fill it.
And to be clear the dismantlement market didn’t exist prior because at that point the rule of law specifically allowed the racial discrimination that so many Americans still find central to their identities.

Anyway I *guess* there was a period when Republicans might have been able to fool themselves but after Watergate / Iran Contra / Iraq / Trump we’re well past any benefit of the doubt.
