If you were thinking of applying to TinySeed, the accelerator for bootstrapped software businesses, might want to get on that.
We probably need a richer vocabulary for describing software businesses than the bootstrapped / funded dichotomy, particularly as funding sources/models diversify.
No conversation I've ever had professionally interests me less than "Is that a startup or is a STARTUP startup?", with the possible exception of "OK help me understand, for the purpose of monthly recurring revenue, what revenue recurs monthly?" (This is, regretfully, a thing.)

I didn't expect the Bitcoin economy to kick out a pretty thought-provoking essay on the nature of trust in a corporate memo, but they did, so see this screenshot of the memo.

You'll see examples of this *all over* if you look for them.
A random example for you: settlement times go up as inter-institutional trust goes up.

The Bitcoin economy wears on its sleeve that it trusts no one, and has ~1 hour settlement.

Banks in the US settle e.g. checks in X days.

In Japan, interbank payments can take Y months.
And the nations of Japan and the United States signed a piece of paper in like 2007 which says, among many other things, "We're going to net out a 7 figure liability about Patrick in, hmm, 2060 or so. No big deal, we know you're good for it."

Some of the things which I like about the developer experience, coming from the polar opposite of Google scale:
You can pretty predictably get issued a new laptop (on day one) and immediately pull down the set of dependencies necessary to run your own instanced copy of (a subset up to the whole enchilada of) Stripe, somewhere in the cloud.
It feels surprisingly close to running a Rails monolith on localhost in terms of change behavior/poke/observe changed response loop, and the gap has been sharply narrowing over the last ~2 years.

"How much would a generically smart liberal arts graduate know about this subject within 2 weeks of hearing it existed?" successfully predicts about 98% of articles.

(One can trivially cite the 2%, but they're not labeled "This is the one today which isn't mostly winging it.")
What percentage of articles written about, say, HFT were written by someone who could succeed at this challenge: "Draw me an order book. Any order book."
Related questions that would just be mean: “How many order books are there for Google shares? Within an order of magnitude is fine.”, “A retail investor does a market sell for five shares. Which order book is impacted and how?” “Same question, institutional investor, limit, 100k”

It's late night and I'm in a mood, it's as good as a time as any to talk about my weight loss adventure. Hopefully, some of you might find something relatable in this. At worst, you'll have a laugh. But I gotta say some things I been keeping inside.
I was a pretty healthy kid. I don't know if I can call myself chubby, but when I was little, I definitely had those cheeks that aunties cannot stop squeezing. As you can see in these pictures, kinda standard issue really.
Weight was NEVER an issue where I grew up. Part of it was that very few people were not skinny or on the skinny side (I grew up as a refugee around other refugee kids, where food was a luxury). Part of it was also the culture. Being fat was a sign of wealth. It wasn't all bad.

I talk a lot about how you can’t be a great developer without great communication skills, but I don’t think people grok how _directly_ your communication skills are reflected in your codebase. Let me give you an example.
Let’s say you’re working in a legacy codebase that, in places, resembles a house on Hoarders (BEFORE they clean it out).
These types of codebases are distressingly common. They’re so full of STUFF that you can hardly move around. To get your work done, you’ve got little goat trails of understanding running through it, like the narrow space between piles of junk in an overcrowded living room.

Thinking of applying to grad school soon? Here are some tips that weee helpful to me. I used them in making the best of my grad school experience. Two years later, I’m still reaping the benefits.
1. Why do you want to go to grad school? Ask yourself this question. As @DamiOyedele once told me “argue with yourself and win”.
2. Pick the right schools.

Look for people who have the type of career you want. Check what schools they went to. If you are seeing patterns with certain types of schools, those are the schools you should be applying to. Don’t just randomly pick a school.

Before we start, remember this as you read. Just because YOU think the answer to any of these issues is clear-cut, it doesn't mean that issue is not political.

There are people who take the OPPOSITE position with just as much conviction, and they think it's clear-cut too.
Also - as an engineer, a developer or designer - if you choose to ignore the political and societal implications of your #technology, YOU HAVE MADE A POLITICAL CHOICE.
