Is nuclear energy sustainable? Here are some figures from a life cycle assessment of French nuclear sector and its 'twice through cycle' ac.els-cdn.com/S0360544214002…
One thing that really leaps out at me is just how much the uranium mining impact dominates the overall LCA impacts of nuclear. But from what I know of the sector uranium mining standards are pretty high. I'm not sure this fact has made it through to the LCA community
This is a must read when it comes to the topic of uranium mining impacts oecd-nea.org/ndd/pubs/2014/…
And answering the question - is nuclear energy sustainable? The visual answer (from the same report) is yes, extremely.
And one thing that leaps out from this graph is that nuclear appears to score badly when it comes to water impacts. That in fact is what motivated me to write this post (with some images now missing unfortunately) energycentral.com/c/ec/watering-…
All of which is a long way of saying that nuclear life-cycle impacts are very low, and probably even lower than some of the numbers make it out to be. If that's not sustainable then I'm not sure what is.
