One of the exasperating things about being a public/policy intellectual is the prevalence of zombies -- bad ideas that seem impossible to kill – and cockroaches – bad ideas that you manage to flush down the toilet for a while, but keep coming back 1/
The idea that China has us over a barrel because it might sell our debt (which, to be clear, Brad S is debunking) is a zombie I've been trying to shoot in the head for many years 2/ krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/15/chi…
But it *sounds* serious. Actually, we need an intellectual version of "truthiness" – seriousity? This nonsense view has seriousity, and just won't go away 3/

A few thoughts inspired by @delong's "I am no longer a neoliberal" piece. Brad is really saying two things: there is no center-right, so centrists must deal with the left, and market-oriented policies don't work as well as thought 1/ vox.com/policy-and-pol…
I've been there on both fronts for a while (although I have been fairly left of center for many years). But I think it's useful to ask what it means for policy proposals in different areas 2/
The big issue right now is environmental policy/Green New Deal. Here both aspects of the neoliberal rethink matter. Carbon pricing probably works less well than Econ 101 suggests - it works, for sure, but needs public investment in infrastructure and research too 3/

For what it's worth, all of the "nowcasting" estimates I'm seeing -- efforts to predict what the final number of growth will be -- are showing the economy hitting an air pocket in the 1st quarter:

NY Fed: 0.8
Atlanta Fed: 0.3
St. Louis Fed 0.3 1/
Probably this represents transitory factors incl the shutdown, not the beginning of a recession. But it reinforces the point that good growth in the 2nd and 3rd quarter last year was a blip, not the beginning of a magnificent supply-side era of growth. 2/
Rarely in the course of economic events has such a hyped – and hugely expensive – policy belly-flopped this badly. But GOP faith in the magic of tax cuts will, of course, not be affected at all 3/

The position that it's un-American to raise any questions about the president – as long as he's Republican, of course – is much more blatant now, but not new 1/ washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/…
I remember Republicans declaring that it was unpatriotic to oppose Bush's plan to privatize Social Security, because getting his way was important to his credibility, and he needed to be credible to fight terrorism. 2/
Needless to say, all of this will go down the memory hole as soon as there's a Democrat in office 3/

All this Sokal Revisited: The Return Of Punk'd (Academic Edition) has me thinking about peer review more generally. Here's a quote that really shat me off me a few months ago, and continues to irritate today.

48 hours ago i knew why i wanted to return the moto X4. 24 hours ago i vaguely remembered. now I can't remember at all.
it's particularly upsetting because there are tons of things i like about this phone, i'm just now unable to remember what i *don't* like that i felt was a showstopper

#Khashoggi Case Thread: I am going to ‘pin’ this post to use it as an ‘Info Thread’ on the #Khashoggi Case. I am in #Turkey. I’ve been following the case closely and with access to sources & experts here. This is a very ‘sensitive’ criminal case due to ‘Diplomatic Booby Traps’!!!
The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
#Turkish Intel-Investigative Bodies also have the list of all Diplomatic & Private Saudi & “other significant’ Planes in #Turkey for the period of ‘interest.’ Many of the Target airports have their own security cameras & related evidence.

Did you know that a lot of autistic people have problems processing sensory input? Even leaving the house can be totally overwhelming as we are less tolerant of bright lights, strong smells, loud noises (or multiple noise sources), textures, motion etc. #ActuallyAutistic
If you’re meeting an autistic friend, try to meet somewhere quiet & calm. If you can make the effort to travel closer to us, that helps greatly as long journeys can be really difficult. On top of the sensory issues, we can be very anxious about planning. #ActuallyAutistic

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
