Govt. has been releasing commemorative stamps to honour musicians.

I used to be an avid stamp collector, once! Not much now! Both cos of time and waning interest! Starting a thread on postal stamps/first-day covers in MY personal collection.

Beginning with Saint Tyagaraja!🙏
The stamp and FDC on Carnatic composer Muthuswami Dikshitar was released sometime in 1976.
A stamp on Pt Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, the renaissance master of Hindustani music who established the famous Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya to promote nationalism via music!
A stamp on poet saint Tulsidas, whose magnum opus Sri Ramacharitamanas is pretty much integral to Hindustani music. 😊
Sometime in 1998, a series of 4 stamps was released on Indian classical music instruments in collaboration with the Sharan Rani Backliwal Gallery of Musical Instruments in New Delhi. This one on the Rudra Veena belongs to that series. 😊
A stamp on the famous poet Miyan Tansen in 1986. His poems and compositions are sung in Hindustani and Dhrupad.
A postage stamp on the great Carnatic stalwart musician Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar was released in 1991.
A postage stamp in 1999 on the multifaceted genius Acharya Allauddin Khan Saheb, who was the founder of the Maihar Gharana and who was the guru of many stalwarts including @ragaravishankar , Ali Akbar Khan, Nikhil Bannerjee and more!
A FDC and stamp on Sarod maestro Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Saheb. He was the father of Ustad @AAKSarod and the grandfather of @AmaanAliBangash and @AyaanAliBangash.
A 50 Ps postage stamp on the iconic Tamil poet Mahakavi Subramania Bharati whose poems and songs have become integral to Carnatic music.
A postal stamp of 1 rupee on the famous violinist from Andhra Pradesh Sangita Kalanidhi Dwaram Venkataswami Naidu.
A postal stamp in 1999 on the great Carnatic stalwart Sangita Kalanidhi Musiri Subramania Iyer
A postal stamp and FDC on Sangita Pitamaha saint Purandara Dasa!

Bharat Ratna M S Subbulakshmi, the ONLY Indian classical musician honoured with three different stamps and FDC!
First is the old postage stamp,

3rd a US$ stamp at @UNinIndia!

Wonderful news coming in from the ancient temple of lord Venkataramana in Mulki in remote coastal Karnataka!

The temple is one of the holy places for the Saraswat Brahmin and GSB community.

A short thread about the latest news with some history follows. 🙂🙏
Situated on the bank of river Shambhavi, the little town of Mulki is home to numerous temples dating back to 6th century. Among those are the Venkataramana and Ugra Narasimhaswamy temples.

It was a peaceful little town filled with scores of devout Hindus.
All this changed when Islamic invaders began attacking and looting temples across the region. Don't want to get into those gory details now.

The priests of the Mulki dropped the Utsava murthis of Lord Narasimha into a well inside the temple to keep it safe from invaders.

Starting a long thread on my recent visit to the ancient temple town of Tiruvarur. The massive temple complex of Lord Tyagaraja and goddess Kamalamba.🙏 Tiruvarur is also the birthplace of the trinity of Carnatic music. Saint Tyagaraja, Muththuswamy Dikshita and Shyama Shastry.
First the wonderful 35 acre large temple complex and the Kamalalayam tank! Lord Shiva is worshiped in the form of a Marakatha Lingam. Separate sannidhis for lord Tyagaraja and Devi Kamalamba.
9 rajagopurams, 80 vimanams, 13 mandapams, 15 sacred wells, 100 independent shrines!
There is enough and more about the temple. Will return to it. My interest was to re-visit the birthplaces of the Trinity of holy Carnatic music. Starting with the eldest among them Sri Shyama Shastri (1762 -1827), Saint Tyagaraja (1767 -1847) and Muthuswamy Dikshita (1775-1835)

On #Dhanteras or Dhanvantri Trayodashi, a short thread in honour of Lord Dhanvantri, the physician of the gods and the lord of traditional medicine.

An amsa-avatara of Lord Vishnu, he was born on Aswiyuja Bahula Trayodasi during the churning of the ocean.
During the Samudra Manthanam, in search of the nectar of immortality, or Amritam, the devas and asuras churned for years and years. Dhanvantri arose from this churning holding a Kamandalam and danda in his hands. (31/45, Bala Kanda, Valmiki Ramayana)
In the 29th chapter of Harivamsa we have another description of Dhanvantri.

Dhanvantri arose from the churning paying his obesance to lord Vishnu who was in his Kurma Avatara then. He was named Abja. He requested a Yagnabhaaga but was denied. But Vishnu grants him a boon.

Never in PDP’s 20-Year history have they gone into a presidential campaign with State Governors as unbothered as the current set. If you know anything about the PDP - and about Nigeria really- it is that Presidential campaigns tend to ride largely on the back of Governors

Governors are the most powerful set of politicians in the Nigerian democracy, after the President, for obvious reasons - they control half of all Revenues accruing to the Federation. PDP, as a veteran ruling party, quickly mastered the art of ‘managing’ its Governors.
The reason Atiku almost upstaged OBJ in 2003 was because he had the PDP Governors lined up firmly behind him. Obasanjo was a rattled man, and reportedly had to BEG to get a second-term ticket. The Governors could easily have had him dethroned. They - Govs - were/are The Party!

The first thing that came to mind when I read this were the two interviews I've given for my PhD. Both times I came out feeling completely undeserving of doing one, and I cleared both.
Both panels had nothing good to say about the proposal I had submitted and no one acknowledged that I had worked five years in the field, doing a six day, 70 hour week for most part and still managed to turn in an application and clear an entrance exam

My whole life, I was told I asked too many questions. My mum would encourage me to ask but teachers and neighbours would consistently shut me up when she wasn’t there. So, I toned it down and simply HOPED that what I thought things were, were what they really are.

Examples:
1. If I had asked my former boss to explain to me why I wasn’t getting my pension statements and Tax reports, I would have known sooner from his response that he lacked integrity and empathy.

Instead, I HOPED he would see how hard I worked and not cheat me that way. I goofed!

Before I started moving with Nigerians, I used to think all men are the same, but as I made friends with Nigerians, I noticed all men aren't. It was very obvious in fact. The may Nigerian men talk and act to ladies is absolutely remarkable.
At first I thought they behave that way just to woo ladies. Turns out I was wrong again. Over the years, I've come to notice how 9ja men treat ladies in their life(Mother, Sister, Wife/Girlfriend, daughter) with absolute respect I began to envy
