thinking about this a bit more, and I realized I may have fallen into the "telling people how to have fun" trap I was bemoaning not so long ago. do whatever is fun for you and your group! if being very familiar w/ one system and hacking it is best for you, then great! have fun!
I just want to push back against the idea that D&D 5E is The One True Perfect System for everything always, which is what I was reacting to in my initial tweet. D&D has its merits! but it is not perfect and it doesn't do everything perfectly.
discovering the wide variety of systems beyond D&D was a huge revelation for me, and it's led me to some awesome, fun places (obviously). if other options aren't accessible or interesting to you/your group, that's fine.
but I don't want people to just dismiss the incredible variety of systems and huge amount of work done by so many brilliant, talented designers, especially in the indie design space, by saying "oh well I can do that with D&D." maybe you can! but other systems might be better.
