Here are my suggestions for how the #YouthStrike4Climate could win. Please don't judge this by the headline - it's absolutely NOT a manifesto: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
It would be act of appalling presumption for an old fart like me to write young people's manifesto for them. I've asked for the header to be changed.
I know the text will upset some people, as I've tried to be brutally honest about where I feel previous movements have failed. But I believe we have a duty not to replicate them. If protest is to change the world, we must work out when and why it has succeeded.
I include an example of an amazing and inspiring success - the campaign by indigenous people in Mexico to stop Latin America's biggest infrastructure project (a massive international airport). Some crucial lessons to learn from it.
Blimey, there are some unpleasant, youth-hating comments in the thread, Here's my response to some of them:
Reading this comment thread, I feel I understand for the first time how the slaughter in World War One went on for so long. Older people flatly refusing to listen to the concerns of the young and not giving a damn about their lives. Denial and complacency.
It's what disturbs me most about this country: the way some people pull up the drawbridge once they have what they want, and refuse to listen to the concerns of others. I'm all right Jack, so the rest of you can sod off.
You have to spend some time abroad to see what an extremely individualistic and atomised nation this is. There's a belief that's widespread in certain sectors here: once you're comfortable, you owe nothing to anyone else.
