Honestly, researching this story flat out shocked me. The lengths that Google, Microsoft, Amazon & other tech companies are going to help the oil industry accelerate the climate crisis—and the profits they're reaping in the process—is astonishing. gizmodo.com/how-google-mic…
Last year, around the height of climate crisis awareness, Google started an ENTIRE OIL & GAS DIVISION aimed at supplying innovations in AI & automation to big oil. It's literally angling to be, and I quote "the partner of choice" to the oil industry. How did we miss this?
Google is partnering with oil giants like Total to develop AI to help it better explore for oil. It teamed up with Andarko, one of the largest US oil production cos. It partnered with an oil investment bank to help the oil industry compete *against* clean energy startups.
As for Microsoft, I'll just leave this here.
Amazon, meanwhile, has a detailed, public-facing portal designed to attract oil industry clients by promising improved yields and efficiencies with machine learning, automation, and IoT services
As climatologist @MichaelEMann told me when I shared these findings with him, “It is indeed disturbing to see the tech industry helping move civilization back into the fossil age even as they purport to be about cutting edge technology intended to lead us into the future." Yep.
Recently, employees at the big tech firms have wielded their power to protest sexist policies & military contracts. Maybe their next act can be pushing Silicon Valley executives to stop helping the oil industry accelerate the climate crisis gizmodo.com/how-google-mic…
