Worth a read (about the Giles Fraser call for a return to the past).
Fraser's argument for Brexit is a very socially conservative one: of "change as loss", that "it's not the economy, stupid", and one that harks back to a golden age.
He's actually done us a favour by distilling & articulating a widespread impulse into its purest form.
His invoking of socially conservative Islam as representative of this alleged better way was probably the peak of his purism: the ultimate picture of what Fraserism looks like.
Which is logically of a more feudal society, where women are "homemakers", and the vast majority of us are God-fearing peasants, bound by custom and shared prejudice.
By no coincidence, Fraser is a man of God.

This is right. May will now usher MPs to the harder deadline (but still not a drop-dead deadline) unless she is stopped, which she may well be, meaning those EU elections could well happen,
The stalemate would then see UK still in the EU in an ante room, potentially for years...
Some irony that it's "Leave means Leave" who are first out the traps preparing legal action to ensure the Euro elections happen.... thus softening the new cliff edge.... thus keeping us in for much much longer....
There are sometimes advantages with groups not having a plan or a clue what they are doing beyond shouting and waving pitch forks

This is the first time I've seen Dan Hannan sound fed up about his own side's radicalisation.
To date he has been very loyal to the Leave movement's centre of gravity.
And being nostalgic for a more measured style of Brexitism, of which he was a significant voice.
It's also, to my mind, a tacit acknowledgement that this botched Brexit is not simply down to "Remainer May" - a gross mischaracterisation of what has happened (yet also a characteristic abdication of responsibility by Leavers).

For the 2nd quote, one has to read the full run-up to it which starts: "if we don't leave the EU on 29th March democracy will have dimmed. Many people will see it as an establishment agenda to totally thwart Brexit."

So it's Brexiteer intransigence causing delay. Until it isn't
A great example of how Brexit supporters are in an awful muddle over May's Deal (which they hate) and the need to exit on time (which they want).

Media coverage to date focused on the structure of this single @IrelandsFuture event rather than the reasons for it taking place. In more than 20yrs covering politics, I can't recall many, if any bigger political gatherings outside party conferences/ard fheiseanna.
The loudest applause so far were for 'we didn't vote for #Brexit', applause against the bomb in Derry, and applause in support of the Principle of Consent (respecting majority view in NI/North).
These debates on the future have to take place across all communities and between them. Demographic change, the failure of Stormont & #Brexit mean some change is inevitable. We all need to play a part in that discussion and find a way to protect everyone's rights and identities.

One way or another a British prime minister will sign the NI backstop. Either it will be May as part of a negotiated exit deal or by someone else after we crash out when the EU is calling all the shots and demanding all its own terms.

Should we crash out then if even half of no deal warnings are true (and there is plenty evidence to suggest they are) then UK has zero leverage of any kind and will simply have to concede to whatever the EU puts on the table just to reopen talks - as no deal cannot stay no deal.
There is really no way to avoid a backstop of some sort. A review clause is the best we can hope for. The best strategy is to sign it then make damn sure it never gets activated by joining Efta and retaining the EEA. The remaining issues are then far simpler to resolve.

1. The ultra brexiters are going all out for their WTO option #Brexit. They are gradually pushing the narrative that anything including a withdrawal agreement is a betrayal of Brexit and their thicko followers are buying it. This is dangerous.
2. As a Brexiter of long standing I know these players quite well. They are all indoctrinated in the ultra libertarian deregulation fantasies and the fact that just about every business group says they don't want deregulation it does not have any impact on their delusions.
3. As to their followers, these are the intellectually subnormal grunters who genuinely do think the Eu is a modern manifestation of the USSR. They're not well. Now don't get me wrong, I'm still a leaver but these people are fucking loony tunes.

It's fair to say that there is only a small (though significant) movement towards "remain" & against #Brexit, leading some to say that a #PeoplesVote might lead to the same result
But let's look at where we are

2) the press is still largely pro #Brexit. The BBC has, in the name of balance, been at best hopeless in holding brexiters to account for previous statements and more importantly, both major parties are still pretending their Brexit will be OK
There's no major voice against it
3) and yet, despite the lack of any major voice exposing the reality of #Brexit, the message is still getting through about what a screw up Brexit really is.

There's consistent polls showing a majority who think Brexit is going badly, and a lack of faith in government handling
