I commend @AOC, @EdMarkey & #GreenNewDeal co-sponsors for putting the urgent need to confront #climatechange with an ambitious clean energy mobilization on the top of the political agenda. This is an urgent threat. Confronting it is a real opportunity for economic renewal.

The mandate for @NancyPelosi’s Climate Select Committee is out, and it’s everything we feared.

❌No mandate to create a plan on the timeline mandated by top scientists
❌No language on economic & racial justice, or a just transition
✅Allows members to accept fossil fuel money
It even lacks even the power to issue subpoenas, a power that has been granted to other special committees.

The ONLY reason to do this is to protect the corporate CEOs who have unlawfully suppressed information about the dangers of climate change to protect their own profits.
Democratic leaders had an opportunity to embrace young peoples' energy and back the #GreenNewDeal.

But they failed us once again. This toothless committee does not get us meaningfully closer to solving the climate crisis or fixing our broken economy.

1️⃣ The referendum result in Washington State looked like more relentless campaigning by the fossil fuel industry against #climate action;

without that industry onslaught, the #carbontax referendum there would probably have passed.

2️⃣ A #carbontax is not “expensive,” as in our proposals all the money goes back to the public.

Taxing #carbon moves energy markets toward cheaper renewables.
On balance, people save money.

Don’t forget that the savings from avoiding #climate catastrophes are immense.
