This is exactly right. They accused opponents of the Iraq War of supporting Saddam. They accused opponents of US involvement in the war in Libya of supporting Gaddafi. They accuse opponents of US intervention in Syria of being pro-Assad. Same scummy tactic now used for Maduro:
By this reasoning, anyone opposed to US regime change operations to topple the despotic Saudi monarchy is a fan of Mohammed bin Salman. How can you support someone like this who imprisons dissidents, murders journalists, and has created mass starvation in Yemen?
This slimy rhetorical tactic was also invoked throughout the Cold War, including by McCarthy: anyone who challenged US propaganda about the Russians or who advocated better relations with Moscow was accused of being a supporter of the Kremlin. Sadly, this is still in use.

Worth noting that it's already a crime in France to advocate a boycott of Israel. Activists have been arrested in Paris (the city where they had that massive "free speech" march) for wearing "Boycott Israel" t-shirts. france24.com/en/20160120-fr…

This was 4 months after the NYT op-ed page published @LouiseMensch as its expert on what Congress should be investigating on Trump/Russia: her exclusive report that Orrin Hatch was secretly being prepared to be President & was already receiving security briefings.
A major but under-appreciated aspect of the media's behavior in the Trump/Russia mania are the charlatans who were elevated, given platforms & praised for their expertise & insights. Go back & read Eric Garland's "game theory" thread & remember who praised it & what they said.
Just take a look at what the editor-in-chief of a major liberal journal said about one of the most unhinged, deranged, maniacal and twisted rants ever posted on this site. This is the climate that prevailed after Trump won & it only degenerated from there

The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
#Turkish Intel-Investigative Bodies also have the list of all Diplomatic & Private Saudi & “other significant’ Planes in #Turkey for the period of ‘interest.’ Many of the Target airports have their own security cameras & related evidence.

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."
