I woke up to a front-page article in the NYT noting that 50 years ago today the Dead recorded Dark Star at Fillmore West, setting me up for a whole day of melancholic musing. nyti.ms/2NxXaR4
Has any generation--in history--been more swiftly and completely rendered obsolete by massive social and technological change than mine? We're still going to be alive for a while, one hopes, but what do we do with the rest of it?
That's a serious question, not a self-pitying one. I'll be fine. I'm thinking about other Americans of roughly my age.

Because of the collapse in the business model for journalism, we get very little foreign news coverage. But at the same time, we have Google Translate--an astonishing advance in machine translation. It's good enough to be used to read most foreign newspapers.
I'm not sure whether people are aware how well Google Translate can handle this kind of task. It's amazing.

I'm going to try putting out a weekly (or even daily) summary of the most interesting articles I find in those papers.
I wonder if this could replace some of the reporting gap.

I think I speak for more--far more--women than the media would have you think when I say that I want men to feel free, to have no second thoughts, to display warmth and physical affection with us,
and *deeply* resent the minority of women who have forced this "change of social mores" upon us. I don't want this loveless, HR-compliant, anti-human world. I don't want women who are obviously full of rage toward men to be setting the terms of our new social climates.
I don't want a world in which young people are so afraid of each other that they stop having sex. I don't want scolding Junior-Anti-Sex-League puritanical martinets lecturing men that they're not allowed to touch us because it is "inappropriate."

They don't speak for me.

That's a gesture of affection, support, and warmth. Sounds like a spontaneous one. Without touch and affection, babies wither and die. Adults, deprived of affection, become depressed. Humans touch each other to comfort each other. This is not "deeply inappropriate."
I don't want to live in a world in which men think twice about--and suppress--their instinct to comfort me when I'm in distress with a gesture of physical affection. It sounds unbearably cold and lonely. It sounds inhuman.

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

Today's movies-on-TV thread is devoted to a single film. The debut, 60 years ago today, of Dieterle's brilliant HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1939) on WOR's "Million Dollar Movie.'' I first saw this masterpiece during at least one of its 16 showings on Channel 9 during New Year week.
HUNCHBACK was was the only film shown at the first Cannes Film Festival in 1939, cancelled after World War II broke out. It was among the most famous of the 700-plus movies acquired by WOR's parent company, RKO General, when it bought the failing studio from Howard Hughes in 1955
I'm going to focus on two issues: how WOR severely cut the film for its first TV showings, as well as its mysterious, little-known showing on another New York City TV station 14 years earlier, which is why I'm not labeling its first appearance on MDM 12/29/58 as a "NY TV debut.''

Ten years ago today PFC Daniel McGuire was KIA by enemy fire in Fallujah. I remember the 1st day he came to our company while we were in the mid of CAX. When we came in from field, I found him & his gear on my rack, I promptly chewed his ass & had him running laps around the hut
He was a super boot, having just graduated SOI & sent to us 1 month before we deployed, so naturally he was the target of a lot of jokes & light hazing. We all liked him a lot, he was the company's little brother. Been a decade & I still remember him clear as yesterday
Daniel was 19yo and 1 yr removed from high school. I wish I could say his death had meaning, that it was in service of a noble cause, but the fact that we still have Marines dying there 10 years later is testament to the wasted youth of our generation of service members

Thread: Six years ago today, I found out that I have #MultipleSclerosis. A battle I wasn’t prepared for, but with the help of my family and friends, I continue to fight.

I hope my story will help someone else with #MS or a loved one of someone with MS.
I’ve always been in love with athletics and exercise, I played EVERYTHING growing up and that didn’t change as I entered adulthood.

I remained a very active person, so when my body began to feel “off”, I knew something was wrong.
One morning I woke up and my legs didn’t really have sensation, sort of like “pins and needles” when you’ve been sitting too long.

I didn’t think much of it, and I decided to go play football that day anyway. Most of the game I felt fine, but then my legs felt sensation-less.

Today actually makes it over two decades since the sad killing of Ken Saro-Wiwa by the Nigerian State under Abacha alongside 8 others: Felix Nuate, Baronem Kobel, Saturday Dobee, Daniel Gbooko, Nordu Eawu, Baribor Bera, Paul Levura and John Kpuinee.

I think it’s worth a Thread.
This thread captures history from various perspectives all blended together to reveal a fuller picture.

It shows that Saro-Wiwa was also human like any of us but he was exceptionally courageous and dogged in spite of his human flaws.
Saro-Wiwa was a diminutive man who invariably always smoked a pipe and was considered quite brilliant.

He wrote a popular play which was adapted for TV when we were younger “Basi and Company”.

He was from Ogoni - an oil-producing area in Rivers State which has several villages.
