Labour members have one job in the next few days - to persuade 20+ wavering English Labour MPs to back the amendment - supported by the members and the leadership - to call a second Brexit referendum. Here's why... 1/
2/ Do we want to stop May's Brexit - yes or no? If no you are basically turning Britain into a rule-taking state with no advantages for working people. If yes, how? ...
3/ We tried No Confidence and failed; so who are you, an MP from one constituency, to decide your local interests override the strategy of a 3-nation party?
4/ all the arguments against PV are now self-delusion from MPs who want to "get Brexit over with" - PV is the only democratic way of resolving this if May can't secure a majority in Commons...
5/ Our party can only win power as an alliance of progressive people - on values. Not by wishing the most important decision for a generation would go away. My article on this... newstatesman.com/politics/brexi…
6/ Any frontbencher who won't back Corbyn's pro-PV amendment enthusiastically should consider stepping down, like frontbenchers did who could not back A50. This is our strategy now, like it or not...
7/7 A reminder: Stalinism has destroyed every movement in Britain it's had control of: forget the economic nationalism of the Morning Star - they actively seek a no-deal Brexit. So back the Labour membership and fight for Labour values. More here: newstatesman.com/politics/uk/20…

Umunna split, quick analysis 1/ It's small and predictable. The project is to make Labour unelectable by continually slandering it as racist and a threat to national security. But this is not big enough to make an impact - hence their plan to stand in marginals in future...
2/ It does have the potential to screw up the PV campaign, of which I am a member and it was interesting to see the actual liberal centrists (and many Lab ppl) in PV distance themselves from Chuka's move...
3/ I understand Umunna and Mandelson repeatedly tried to gain control of the PV campaign since last summer but failed because the serious forces inside know only Labour can mitigate or stop Brexit; hence the split today is more like a Plan B...

Theresa May's government is falling apart in office. It can only win votes to keep itself in power, and cannot pass the substantive legislation it promised in its manifesto... 1/ so why no constitutional crisis?
2/ The U.K. Brexit Impasse is nothing to do with procedure: the implicit rule is: a neoliberal cannot fall if its replacement is pledged to cancel neoliberalism...
3/ Even in Australia, where Labor is nowhere near leftist, the fossil lobby and the white racists have to cling to power because the change that's coming, as neoliberalism dies, just needs their fingers removed from the levers of power...

One underappreciated effect of today's announcement by 7 MPs that they are leaving Labour: I think it has significantly raised the chances of a snap election being called in the next couple of weeks.
Theresa May's #Brexit renegotiation is going precisely nowhere. She has no plan, has made no progress, & in the absence of any revised offer she is resorting to asking her MPs to back her out of loyalty. A humiliating repeat defeat awaits. Unless an election can save her...
An election in the face of alleged intransigence by the EU, Labour & Parliament gives her an opening to go to the country on a platform of saving Brexit from suffocation by the Establishment. It offers a chance to unite the Tory Party behind a thin veneer of unity one last time.

So. Tomorrow the House of Commons will vote on a series of possible amendments to Theresa May's 'Plan B' - or rather the 'plan of action to achieve a Plan B' - which itself officially reads as follows:
The amendment most likely to pass – and therefore the one on which most attention has been paid – is this one from Conservative party chairman Sir Graham Brady. It's effectively an instruction to go back and seek *some unstated other way* to avoid a hard border in Ireland:
Tonight, Theresa May has asked her backbenchers to vote in favour of this amendment. She is basically asking them to tie her hands, so that Brussels will clearly know what it would take to win the Commons' backing for any deal.

Let's look back at what Corbyn has done, and more importantly not done, over the past few weeks on #Brexit & a #PeoplesVote
Sneak peak: it definitely wasn't "for the many"
2) Firstly, it was an open secret that Corbyn & all other party leaders knew that a Vote of No Confidence was *never, ever* going to succeed.

Every Tory MP would vote for May (as they did) and the DUP was never going to vote for "United Ireland" Corbyn
Whole thing was a farce
3) so all the talk, by multiple Labour Front benchers on "timing" & "not playing games" when it came to the VoNC was either a deliberate lie or gullibility.

The timing made no difference because the chances of May losing it were vanishingly small

When all the #Brexit chat is about parliamentary shenanigans it’s easy to forget that these decisions will have real-world impacts, including a potential #nodeal… here’s a quick look at where #nodeal planning currently stands:
1. First the good news: the Government has struck agreements with the USA, Canada and 8 other countries to ensure flights can continue even in the case of no deal (nothing yet on flights to/from/within EU countries though)

2. And the Government’s lottery for road haulage permits has opened – so if you’re a haulage company that wants to transport goods across the EU after a #nodeal Brexit, get your application in now for a 5% chance of securing a permit (h/t @RHANews)
