Please don’t let elite pundits, who tend to see race as a primary issue because they enjoy class privilege, down play the extent to which class disadvantage is a primary way the effects of racism manifest.
If you’re talking about mass incarceration and you’re not talking about how poverty is the biggest predictor of serving time, you’re not adequately serving the interests of black people.
If you’re talking about black people being excluded from New Deal programs widened the wealth gap and arent immediately following that with an argument for why blacks need universal health care and a jobs guarantee, your motives are suspect.
If you’re talking about housing segregation and the role redlining played in the racial wealth gap but never challenge an economic system that ties a family’s ability to send its kids to college to its ability to purchase a home 40 ago, take a beat to re-evaluate.
The goal here isn’t to participate equally in an inequitable system. It’s to challenge a system that requires inequity, and which exploits racial prejudice to justify that inequity.
