Since this fool wants to come for my comedy crush @nicolebyer let’s break down ALL the issues with this foolish ass thread.
1: I’ve watched every episode of @NailedIt & to claim that Nicole Byer is only nice to black contestants is frankly a lie. However, even if that were the case, consider that this is a highly edited reality TV show which means editors choose which parts of her behavior we see.
2: Mr. Flores seems to lack a fundamental understanding of what #racism is so let’s review, shall we? Racism is fundamentally a belief that one’s own race is superior, however, in critical race theory, scholars also assert that racism must be combined with systemic power to work.
This means that without the collective power of white supremacy & its continued legacies of destruction of POC communities, people of color cannot be racist toward white people. White people continue to hold the vast majority of social, political & financial power.
What Mr. Flores may be complaining about is bias or discrimination, that is, he may be noticing Nicole Byer’s potential preference for black folks or her refusal to coddle/center white people.
For white folks who feel entitled to everything, including the love of black folks, esp fat black women they view as mammies, not being favored by Nicole on the show could be experienced as a surprising slight. But whenever we explore bias we also need to talk about harm.
Does Nicole (supposedly) laughing more at non-black contestants on a show literally about publicly embarrassing yourself by failing at baking do harm? Contestants agree to be on the show & at this point many come to see HER, the fucking star.
3: Mr. Flores claims Nicole sexually harasses attractive contestants. I would contend Nicole PERFORMS being sexually thirsty/flirtatious on the (again highly edited) show. In our current moment, folks, esp men, seem unable to distinguish between consensual flirting & harassment.
Furthermore, as a fat black woman, Nicole’s demeanor on the show & her podcasts reclaims a sexuality long denied women like her (& me) and does so without harming or assaulting anyone.
As a result, I would like to send a big old NOPE to Mr. Flores. His thread lacks evidence & demonstrates a lack of understanding of how power dynamics of race & gender shape the perception & effects of individual behavior.
In conclusion, @nicolebyer is fucking gem of a human who deserves better than Mr. Flores’ shitty tweets.
