I watched CBC news channel for about the first time in 30 years. Much as I revel in possibility of Trudeau being exposed as the shallow fool that he is, there's another side to the scandal. SNC is an important and leading Canadian engineering company which ambitious federal
prosecutors want to charge with bribery in Libya more than 10 years ago. Americans know that over-zealous criminal prosecution can destroy an innocent company, as @SidneyPowell1 described so well in connection with destruction of Arthur Andersen by crooked and over-zealous Andrew
Weissman. Federal politicians, including the usually feckless Trudeau, were worried that criminal prosecution of SNC could have extremely negative consequences on viability of company. Government even passed a law creating Deferred Prosecution Agreement technique for SNC type
situation. (I don't know exactly what that it is, but it sounds sensible for SNC). The PM Office urged the then Attorney General to fully consider all the potential ramifications of SNC criminal prosecution and urged DPA. Zealot federal prosecutors uninterested. Nobody seems to
have done anything illegal, but Attorney General resigned, alleging too much "pressure" on her from PMO. But what if the prosecutor were as ambitious and over-zealous as Andrew Weissman and thousands of jobs were threatened by potential vanity? What should PMO do in such a case?
I think that Liberals could have made a decent case. Fortunately for Trudeau opponents (and he richly deserves defeat for many other reasons), he's made a hash of this incident and there's blood in the water.
