A lot of powerful Republicans, particularly in the Senate, are starting to acknowledge climate change is real and the need to do *something* about it.
So far they don't have a plan:
“Nobody that I know of in farm country does not realize we have climate change" - Pat Roberts
“In Alaska, our view is that we have no choice" but to tackle climate change -- Lisa Murkowski
“There is a growing consensus on our side that man-made emissions are contributing to global warming, that the ‘green deal’ is absurd, and we should be able to find a more appropriate solution to the problem” - Lindsey Graham
Cassidy's fix: Burn more natural gas instead.
Republicans who have been part of various discussions on climate change legislation include a bunch up for reelection in 2020:

Blue Cross of Michigan is a “nonprofit.”
This is one reason why there is a LOT of lobbying power against having a public option compete against private insurers for ACA customers. The head of CMS makes about $200K/year.

I run into young people a lot who don’t know who Strom Thurmond was.
They should know.
Google “swimming pools Strom Thurmond.”
He had a black daughter he didn’t acknowledge publicly.
He set a record for filibustering civil rights.
Cost Trent Lott his position as the GOP leader.
Strom Thurmond running for president.

On Senate floor Mitch McConnell rips a federal holiday for Election Day as part of a “power grab” by Democrats to win elections.
McConnell said Democrats want “generous new benefits for federal bureaucrats and government employees” including Election Day holiday and up to six days of paid leave “for any federal bureaucrat who decides they’d like to hang out at the polls during an election.”
McConnell thinks those federal workers would use their time off to work to elect Democrats.
He also ripped federal matching funds for candidates, etc. in HR 1, which he calls “The Democratic Politician Protection Act”

Climate change is real. But let’s be honest, solving it by lowering emissions is not going to happen. The required cuts in developed countries are too uncomfortable and the cost to human life in developing ones is too tragic.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t do our best to switch to lower emission ways of doing life, but we’re never going to solve the problem by decreasing emissions enough.
The only solutions are technological: we need to invent a way to pull CO2 out of the air and sequester it somewhere somehow forever and/or we need to invent a way to offset the greenhouse gas effect of the CO2 in the air.

THREAD| Draft of the #Climate Change Act, presented by (@bmu) this week: The proposal is a framework law, featuring elements from international acts, e.g. from UK (@theCCCuk). In contrast to the German Climate Action Plan 2050, it will be legally binding. #Klimaschutzgesetz
2| The framework law includes emission reduction targets, defines CO2 budgets for each sector, and clarifies responsibilities, as well as review, transparency & sanctioning mechanisms. Implementation measures for each sector will be detailled in 2030 programmes, due in Mar 2019.
3| Progress will be supported by an independent advisory group of 7 experts. Focus is on reaching the 2030 CO2 reduction targets, but the draft works towards at least 95% reduction by 2050. The remaining 5% to reach #netzero could be reached through compensation policies.

2. interpret the problem as an emergency
3. feel personal responsibility.

"villains" are easier to blame than nature
Living in cities, far from nature

Climate change is real, and among its many consequences it is making storms worse. Florida Governor Rick Scott, now running for Senate, banned state agencies from using the phrase “climate change.” Floridians should vote accordingly.

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

My essay is only concerned with climate change-related damages in the US spurred, as I argue, by US actors like the oil majors. I could’ve written about Peruvian villagers suing a German energy giant & melting glaciers in the Andes, but that’s beyond the scope of my article.
