One of the most saddening things about the whole Brexit process has been the lying - and the repetition of the lies, the believing of the lies, the failures to call out the lies, and, ultimately, that the lies have won.
More than that, that people who know very well that the lies are lies seem perfectly happy to go along with them because they think it’s popular. It’s a fundamental defeat of truth, of honesty, of evidence, of science, and more.
The liars thrive, their lies are reflected and magnified rather than challenged by the media. The liars get promotion rather than the sack. The liars win.
I mean, we’ve always known that politicians lie, that the media lies etc, but they’ve at least pretended not to in the past, and there have at least been a significant number of politicians and journalists calling it out. Right now, that calling out is all but nonexistent.
We mollycoddle the liars, we design policy to deal with things that don’t exist and make ‘problems’ out of thing that aren’t problems, all because of the lies and the liars.
Brexit is built on a tissue of lies. Labour’s Brexit policy is built on another tissue of lies. And the result is that nothing can be trusted, nothing can be found that works. And still we don’t admit it. Still the politicians bluster and the media blathers.
It’s the reason we haven’t found a ‘deal’. Because there’s no deal to be found, because we’re still trying to solve problems that don’t exist based on lies.
