Reading an advance copy of @emilybazelon’s Caught, on prosecutors, and I’m finding it deeply unsettling.

It excellently shows how our justice system fails in so many ways.

The general reader will be rightly outraged.

I’m shocked, tho, at how little I personally feel.
I shd be angry and outraged at the flaws it lays out: prosecutors who ignore evidence, defendants put in impossible dilemmas by a system indifferent to their lived lives.

Instead I feel myself checking off atrocities: yep, there’s horror #263, ah good, she noted horror #1662...
What does being in this system, on any side of it (DA, defense, defendant, family, community, social work), do to people, if just STUDYING IT produces this sort of overwhelming... numbness?

I’m not in any way burned out, but things that shd make me angry just... don’t anymore.
CHARGED, not Caught.
