Our opinion after today's vote:
"This vote result is no surprise. But there are only 17 days to go until 29 March and people still don’t know what their status will be, whether they will be able to travel and re-enter the countries where they live,
what will happen if they are applying for jobs or to their pension contributions and healthcare if they are pensioners. No deal is a disaster which is why once again we call on the EU and the UK to ringfence the citizens' rights part of the withdrawal agreement now,
before it's too late to take real people's lives' off the negotiating table’. It’s about our fundamental rights and the promises that were made to us."

As you enter your BSG meeting @MichelBarnier , @guyverhofstadt, @Claude_Moraes et al, please reflect upon the citizens who are 24 days away from Brexit with nothing agreed for our future.

A THREAD
For the five million citizens whose status is most directly affected by Brexit, the Costa amendment last week asking for the ring-fencing of their rights was an enormous victory.
Through intensive lobbying, British in Europe and the3million received the unanimous backing of the UK Parliament to push for legally guaranteeing citizens' rights in the event of a no deal. Now we are asking the EU to do the same.

A THREAD...
1) There is currently no legal certainty for the majority of Brits in Europe, as many EU27 countries are either not officially announcing or not confirming their no deal plans until they see what the UK does in relation to their own citizens.
2) The withdrawal agreement (which allows UK citizens either to apply, or simply register for a new status in their host country and to continue to work and receive healthcare and pensions) would go up in smoke...

MPs - do not buy the PM’s pig in a poke.
To head off the Costa amendment, which has extensive cross-party support, she simply announced that Jeremy Hunt had already written to his 27 EU counterparts “to seek assurances on the rights of UK citizens”.
Instead of a binding agreement she offers pious hope.
Instead of taking back control she leaves the fate of British nationals in the hands of 27 different EU governments, all increasingly frustrated with the UK’s handling of Brexit.
The only reason the PM offers is that the EU “does not have legal authority” to ring fence the Citizens’ Rights part of the withdrawal agreement. There is NO legal barrier to such an agreement.

1. On this whole sarcastic 'Brussels is supposed to be the good guy' narrative.

It's true that at the beginning we expected them to be better than the UK Govt on citizens' rights. But that's only because we expected Theresa May and co to behave appallingly. Which they have.
2. The EU/Commission was initially much better than the UK in the negotiations in terms of offering a far more generous settlement covering @The3Million and @BritishInEurope .

****But let's not forget the Commission wasn't supposed to be representing us. The UK was.***
3. The UK then negotiated its own nationals into a terrible position by a) insisting on settled status for EU citizens in the UK (which meant other EU countries have now decided to do the same for Brits in the EU 27)
