Longing for some changes to the system based on the admissions bribery cheating scandal Electric Boogaloo. Competition is bad for education, period. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…
The whole system is rotten and its rottenness is one of the reasons public institutions which are accessible and also high quality are underfunded and constantly asked to do more with less.
The competition for "elite" acceptance underpins abusive systems like no-excuses charters where black and brown kids are tasked to "compete" in a system that is inherently rigged against them. There is no winning. We have to resource the spaces where these kids already are.
Remember the T.R. Landry Prep story from the end of last year? Those kids were physically and emotionally abused in the service of trying to secure admission to elite colleges. That abuse is directly linked to the privilege hoarding of people like those indicted today.
There are more than enough quality institutions which can provide excellent education, but those institutions are public and they have been starved in the name of competition. Let's stop subsidizing elite private higher ed and putting that money into public spaces.
Also, end the SAT. What a waste of everyone's time and quite a lot of money.
