My town #Coonabarabran #Coona sits in NW of #NSW . Just North is the #Pilliga forest, to south & west #WarrumbungleNatPark & #SidingSpringObservatory. Rich farmlands surround it. But it is under threat from #climatebreakdown #schoolstrike4climate
#Coona district is in severe #drought & #waterstress our council Dam is so low that new bores had to be sunk for town’s supply. Farming families are worn down with feeding stock & stress. Paddocks are baked dry #climatebreakdown is reality #SchoolStrike4Climate
In our gardens, forests and farms trees are dying as we face our second #autumn in drought. We are reliant on bore water from the #GreatArtesianBasin to survive #climatebreakdown is a daily reality. #SchoolStrike4climate
Our High School is small but highly successful and respected. But this is a conservative rural community so to stand up, speak up and take action takes courage #schoolstrike4climate some students have this in spades #bravegirls
#climatebreakdown greets them as they enter school, this large dead gumtree (among others) in the school grounds. Students are aware of the threat to our community from the proposed 850 well #csg #GHG #methane #gasfield in our #Pilliga #schoolstrike4climate some students r brave
These #bravegirls made a banner and had a #schoolstrike4climate in #Coona marching from the HS down the street to the park.
#Coona #KnittingNannas and community members supported them as did our local councillor. The students presented Councillor Brady with series of questions asking how the council was going to act to prepare us for #drought #climatebreakdown #watersecurity #SchoolStrike4Climate
Councillor Brady gave a stirring speech thanking the students for their actions and questions. He reflected on the #GomeroiNation #protectors of country of his heritage. He will take student questions to #WarrumbungleSC #SchoolsStrike4Climate
Many community members were proud to support the #SchoolsStrike4Climate of our students and joined them to continue their march to the park where they shared picnic lunch. The students asked for our community input regarding future actions on #climatebreakdown.
It took #courage for these #bravegirls to stand up in our conservative country community & organise a #SchoolsStrike4Climate Your community applauds your action and #leadership THANK YOU!
