We can’t solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis and we must unite behind experts and science.
This of course goes for all crises.

Now the experts urge us to avoid big public gatherings for a better chance to #flattenthecurve and slow the spreading of the Coronavirus. 1/4
So I personally recommend that we do as the experts say. Especially in high-risk areas.

We young people are the least affected by this virus but it’s essential that we act in solidarity with the most vulnerable and that we act in the best interest of our common society. 2/4
The climate and ecological crisis is the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced but for now (of course depending on where you live) we’ll have to find new ways to create public awareness & advocate for change that don’t involve too big crowds - listen to local authorities. 3/4

The Earth is in the midst of an ecological crisis.…

Climate change (also called global warming) refers to the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth.
It is one of the world's most serious problems and greatest challenges. There is no denying that climate change is real, and that it is due to human activity.……
Overwhelmingly, scientists agree that climate change is due primarily to the use of fossil fuels which release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air. These gases trap heat within the atmosphere and are having a wide range of…

1.5 billion children in poverty are set to face climate catastrophe by 2029.

Unicef report: how children, and particularly the most vulnerable, are affected.

The distribution of the world’s 2.3 billion children has important implications for assessing the impacts of climate change.

Population under 18 yrs of age per sq km (2015)…
'Under a ‘business-as-usual’
scenario (RCP 8.5) approximately
1.45 billion children will be living in
zones where average temperature at surface has changed from 0-2ºC to 2-4ºC'.

Unicef's 2015 report suggested 2050, but climate breakdown is faster than expected.

Roger Hallam, cofounder of @ExtinctionR, says "The fact of the matter is we're facing mass starvation in the next ten years, social collapse, and the possible extinction of the human race. It couldn't be worse." Know that this is NOT what the science says.
Know too that it is perfectly logical - rational even - to be very concerned about climate change, to work on mitigation, adaptation, biodiversity, social justice, etc, but to refuse to endorse the non-scientific scaremongering, illegal tactics and political aims of @ExtinctionR.
Also: it's entirely appropriate - vital, in fact - to teach kids about climate change, even if it's scary (which it is). But lying about climate science to frighten kids, and then using them as a tool for political reasons by encouraging them to break the law - that's despicable.

Here we go again...
As you may have noticed, the haters are as active as ever - going after me, my looks, my clothes, my behaviour and my differences.
They come up with every thinkable lie and conspiracy theory. (Thread->)
It seems they will cross every possible line to avert the focus, since they are so desperate not to talk about the climate and ecological crisis.
Being different is not an illness and the current, best available science is not opinions - it’s facts. ->
I honestly don’t understand why adults would choose to spend their time mocking and threatening teenagers and children for promoting science, when they could do something good instead. I guess they must simply feel so threatened by us. ->

😢Yesterday started with tears,
👩‍🏫 as I was finishing up this presentation
👧to give to 150 14 year-olds
🏫 at a local Junior High School here in Geneva.
🌍 They were born at 379 ppm. 1/…
I cleaned myself up for the presentation. I held it together. Then a teacher asked: "I'm sorry, but I'm not sure the students understand the difference between 'catastrophic' and 'cataclysmic' climate change."
Explaining business-as-usual planetary cataclysm to 14 year-olds. 2/
Deep breath. The day improved with normal lovely interactions with dear colleagues, progress on work, and HOORAY! seeing the big banner for the May 24th climate strike at the main university building. 3/

@xrSchweiz @payalclimate @RachaelTreharne @ZedPea @m_sahakian @JulietJFall @DrMoiraFaul @JPvanYpersele @bourg_d @VertsLausannois FYI.
It was too long (and had fewer slides than these) so try to cut down 1/3 if you want to leave time for questions in 45 minutes. It worked, though.
Thanks to @RachaelTreharne and @ZedPea for sharing their immense presentation, video here. Sorry I made your slides less stylish and the whole thing is not as stylish, actually :-(. Esthetics not my forte!

Very bad news indeed from Hong Kong, for democracy and for a viable planetary future. China's annual CO2 emissions now account for roughly 1/3 of the world total. What chance for #FridaysForFuture, #schoolstrike4climate or #ExtinctionRebellion there?…
At a time when civil disobedience, mass movements, divestment and lawsuits seem much more promising to turn the tide on fossil fuel use than long-touted market mechanisms, this is a very dark turn of events indeed. Solidarity with the Hong Kong ☂️ #UmbrellaMovement #Occupy.
Erratum/correction tweet: I ran some numbers and China is responsible for closer to 1/4 than 1/3 of global emissions (data from 2016). Thanks to @Spartacus4NOW for making me check!

The strike for climate on 15th March ran in over 120 countries (and in over 2,000 places), with a global estimated attendance of 1.5m. It had an estimated attendance of 20,000 in London (and thousands upon thousands throughout the UK).

It was and is an incredible, inspiring and extremely news-worthy issue, especially as it's been led by young people, organised by young people, but is galvanising adults to pay attention.
The fact that @BBC could barely be bothered to give it any focus in their TV news programmes (in many cases not even mentioned at all) or in online news (see @BbcClimate for its prominence, or lack thereof online) is an absolute disgrace.

This is a fantastic megathread (over 70 tweets) of student climate protests #FridaysforFuture #ClimateStrike around the world. Every continent is represented. The protests in the US are growing. Apparently Italy had a million protesters. Retweet plz! This is what hope looks like!

There's a conspiracy theory circulating about the #ClimateStrikes: the children can't possibly be organising and thinking for themselves. Someone must be controlling them. 1. Not one shred of evidence has been adduced to support it. Why? Because there isn't any. Thread/
2. The strikes took us veterans by surprise - and they fill me with hope of a kind I thought I'd never feel again. If the young people ask for help, we'll provide it. But they are the leaders now, and we are the followers. They have the moral authority.
3. Have you any idea how patronising and condescending this sounds? Children aren't capable of acting in their own right? The young people organising today are the most inspiring, determined group I've ever come across. They should be honoured, not insulted. #YouthStrike4Climate

Young climate warriors: This Friday, you may be launching the largest coordinated protests of young people and children in history.

The future you're fighting for? That's what I've spent my life working to see.

I'd like to share some truths, from an old warrior to younger ones.
1. First, you're right. You're right to strike; you're right to march; you're right to feel your fear and rage and longing for a better world.

You are the victims of a monstrous intergenerational crime, and you are as right as humans can be to demand justice.
2. You are so right that—even though I'm a tough-skinned veteran of three decades of this fight—your truth brings tears to my eyes.

You should know that there are millions of older people whose hearts are with you.

You should know you are not, in any way, alone.

In short, regulation is bad. They want a national, market based scheme. Except for that time they fought to repeal one.…

[Thread] Broken politics in the UK

I don't think Labour is going to win the next GE. I also don't think Corbyn is going to be beaten in any leadership election because the membership is firmly behind him.

Labour as a political force is toast
This causes a problem. The Conservatives are also split. They aren't really electable either. If they do win it's because of the inept Labour showing not because of their leadership. They are struggling to hold together too.
So where does this leave centrists?

The Lib Dems are nowhere. They've been punched in the face by the electorate over tuition fees multiple times now and I don't see that changing.

They are a spent force. They have no power.

Expectation was climate campaigns and green business action would steadily build up through to late 2020 and crucial crunch dates of US election and Paris Agreement coming into full effect. But the kids are in a hurry. And who can blame them.
