2/In his brilliant 1977 Social Limits to Growth, Fred Hirsch argued (not that he was the first) that market norms of self-interested maximizing behavior tend to override other norms, of rule-obedience, institutional stewardship, & self-restraint.
3/This colonization is perfectly consistent with the axiom of self-justifying self-interest. But once it is applied to small-scale defection (cheating) & large-scale defection (buying rules, or officials, that suit you personally), even low-built market cooperation gets shaky.
