On the street where I live, there are three Jumu’ah mosques dt are just 5 blocks away from each other. My house lies in the middle of 2 of the mosques. Every Friday, my family & I endure terrible noise pollution coming from d 3 minarets. Imagine being subjected to 3 diff khutbah
at the same time? What sort of madness is this? Initially, there was just one central mosque where everyone within d street & beyond pray on Fridays. Trouble started when d Imām was sacked & evicted from his apartment by wife of d late owner of the mosque over some irreconcilable
personal differences. Members of the community rose to salvage d situation before it turns sour but all pleas fell on deaf ears as the woman insisted that she no longer wants the man there. Thus, d congregation broke into 2 factions; pro and anti Imām. A member of the pro Imām
faction then decided to build flats to accommodate him, his family & students for free. In addition, he built a central mosque & installed the man as Imām to spite his former employers. As if that wasn’t enough, d pro Imām faction started holding ‘īd prayers on d same street.
Last year, it took d intervention of the NPF to avert crisis as d two Imāms allegedly were throwing jabs & tantrums at each other from the mimbar. Now, it has been resolved that only one ‘īd prayer should be observed & thats d one at d first mosque where d Imām was sacked
and he should lead it. Unfortunately, the Jumu’ah shenanigan continues. Then, out of the blue, another man built a Jumu’ah mosque just within 5 buildings away from the factional Imām’s. It is attended by people not loyal to either of the two warring factions.
The sad story is, none of the mosques can boast of 25-30 people on Friday. This is the sad reality of Muslim unity today. Now, this is not about Sunni-Sūfī rivalry. All three Imāms are of the Sūfī sect. Two are Tijjāniyyah while one is Qādiriyyah. 2 are Adabiyyah & 1 is Markazi
