1. Many have raised the concern of UK media bias against Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. This thread looks at 1 report published Friday, 4/8/18 in @Guardian. (1/24)
2. The @guardian headline: “Antisemitism row: “Long-standing Labour MP critical of Corbyn stance quits” was the lead story on @Guardian website 4/8/18. The problem? It misled readers as George Eaton (@NewStatesman editor) explains.
3. In fact, Scottish Labour MP Tom Harris lost his seat in 2015 to SNP when Labour lost 40 (of 41) MPs in Scotland, many say in retaliation after Labour joined with the Tory party as “Better Together” to quash the Scottish Independence referendum.
4. On seeing complaints of their last Friday headline, Guardian changed it to “Labour: Former MP critical of Corbyn’s stance quits” and the article was moved from the top story to UK politics.
5. For clarity @guardian deleted “Long-standing” for “Former” & deleted “Antisemitism row”. However on reading the @guardian report, more questions are raised, than answered on the policies of Tom Harris & the motives of his leaving the Labour party. 5/24 theguardian.com/politics/2018/…
6. The @guardian report has 8 paragraphs on Jeremy Corbyn & the “antisemitism row” yet does not explain Tom Harris was forced to RESIGN for Hitler comparisons to the SNP leader until the last line.
7. Tom Harris invoked Hitler to score political points. Not just distasteful, misplaced comparisons trivialise the Holocaust tragedy. In 2012 @guardian’s Scotland correspondent, Severin Carrell 's report on Tom’s fall from grace: theguardian.com/uk/2012/jan/16…
8. There is more. Tom Harris has written alarming articles against EU migrants in the Telegraph ( 2012 ): “Join the Romaphobe club!” ( 8/24)
telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/im…
9. The Harris self-styled immigration code is what truly makes the Harris mask slip, he writes: “It would be absurd to claim that all foreign cultures are beneficial to the UK. Take an extreme example: female genital mutilation.
10. Ok, let’s take Female Gender Mutilation (cutting) Deplorable. However, fact check “foreign cultures” with FGM identify 47 countries with FGM across continents news.trust.org/item/201701300…
11. Is Harris proposing 47 “foreign cultures” will not contribute due to FGM; a “hostile environment stage 2” to block “backward cultures" or deport Roma post-Brexit?
12. Tom Harris is advocating a race discrimination so why did @Guardian parade this ex-politician as credible in “antisemitism row” report?
13. We know @Guardian's stellar efforts defending migrants so why @Guarden’s cherry picking of what they know of Tom Harris, even links to other @Telegraph articles but omit his race discrimination statements?
14. There is more. Tom Harris champions the Tax Payers Alliance (TPA) “We owe TPA “a debt of gratitude”. 14/23
15. If you have not heard of the right-wing think tank “Tax Payers Alliance”, who justify austerity economics, read the Guardian’s great report by Robert Booth (2009 Guardian investigation) of what some call a “front group for the Conservative party”. theguardian.com/politics/2009/…
16. A second @Guardian report (Robert Booth 2009) says “Taxpayers' Alliance admits director doesn't pay British tax”. Did Tom Harris endorse the TPA knowing they had this history of UK tax avoidance and use of tax havens? theguardian.com/politics/2009/…
17. Is the conflict Tom Harris has with Corbyn not antisemitism but policy as Corbyn promised to crack down on tax avoiders & offshore tax havens since the Paradise Papers revelations? (Taxpayers Alliance will not be pleased if Corbyn is elected PM). theguardian.com/world/2017/dec…
18. If @guardian knew Harris endorsed the TPA, knew his policy against migrants, knew he resigned for trivialising the Holocaust, lost his seat to SNP (before Corbyn) why did @Guardian Friday’s report omit so much?
19. To be clear, it is not what the @Guardian editors included in their reporting of the resignation of Tom Harris from the Labour party and the antisemitism row, my concern is their presentation & what they left out.
20. It begs the question what motivated the political editors of Guardian/Observer to publish the original headline and current text so incongruous with what they really knew of Harris - then link it to subsequent reports against Corbyn in the antisemitism row?
21. Last weekend there were at least six @Guardian /Observer articles and opinions on the Corbyn "antisemitism row. I don’t have time to fact check each but sadly fear there may be more questions and omissions like these.
22. So my last question: Why is someone making the choice @Guardian to lead so many headlines on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn "antisemitism row" each day with concerns their presentaiton is unbalanced and unchecked?
23. If you, like me, have concerns with @guardian’s report “Former MP critical of Corbyn’s stance quits” - on accuracy, presentation bias, or any points I’ve raised, then write to @Guardian reader Paul Chadwick, and remind him of the Editor’s code. End. theguardian.com/info/2014/sep/…
