A software developer just asked me "where can I write software that will improve the environment?"

Here's a brain dump on the potential for software to help address environmental problems. It would be great if others could add to it (both examples & ideas welcome).
(Also apologies if a lot of these examples are AI. Not everyone is going to be involved in AI. I get that. But it's an area which shows a lot of promise & gets a lot of attention.)
This report by @PwC_UK sets out the potential for AI across six environmental challenges: climate change, biodiversity, healthy oceans, water security, clean air, weather & disaster resilience @CHerweijer @dwaughray

For example, here's their summary of potential AI applications for tackling climate change. See report for the other environmental challenges.
Deploying IT to improve efficiency in agriculture & the food industry is a massive area. We need to feed a growing population while not destroying nature & simultaneously dealing with climate change. World currently wastes 1/3 of all food produced. Gotta change.
#PrecisionFarming gives farmers data about variation in growing conditions within a field allowing them to optimally manage it for more efficient production and/or water-saving. Deploys software in conjunction with sensors, GPS, drones etc. #agtech

.@seeimpactvision is an example of how IT can reduce food waste in supply chain management. It uses digital images & spectroscopy to determine the condition of food items & decide how they can best be sorted/ripened/distributed to avoid waste @abilalayo

. @FullHarvestTech is a digital marketplace for reducing food waste by connecting buyers with sellers with imperfect or surplus food to sell
Providing information to consumers can help them buy products with a smaller environmental footprint. Ethical consumerism is only going to grow. See @gikibadges. supplychaindigital.com/technology/gik…
Software & AI are being used for climate risk management & adaptation. Google is working on flood risk prediction. A few years ago the UN gave awards to developers of disaster resilience apps. See here:

. @SAPLeonardo are apparently working with #UKPlasticsPact to help reduce plastic waste

This list isn't exhaustive, just what I can recall now. Would be great for others to add to list. Finally, @Microsoft_Green & their chief environment scientist @lucasjoppa are are must-follows on this topic. See this article for further examples:
