I think this comment raises an interesting issue about negotiations and communication (thread)
First of all you could frame a lot of negotiations like this - on all sides. A negotiator asks for something, is grilled by the other side on the rationale, then the other side decides behind closed doors whether to grant it.
But more peculiarly Iain is himself quite critical of what’s going on. He has his own doubts about extensions - he would, if put in the situation, himself grill the PM.
It shows how difficult it is to conduct difficult & emotional negotiations in the public eye in a way that avoids inciting public sentiment
