I'm asked "why should we be ashamed of being white?"
No man or woman should be ashamed of the traits they were born with. But the automatic, unearned advantages whites are granted by our culture? Those don’t come for free. Someone is paying that bill. And it’s not us. /1
If you seek to deny the advantage that I get by virtue of the color of my skin, that won’t lessen my advantage, it just means you’re using precious energy to deny the obvious instead of using that same energy to insure equity and access to those who don’t have it. /2
There is no shame in being born white and male. But when we see inequality, (and evidence of it is all around us) and take no action to correct it, we are failing to live up to a basic moral imperative. The ease with which we can ignore other's right to equality is our shame. /3
The ease with which we a white men or women can choose to look the other way and ignore the unequal status of others, is proof that we have advantages. If inequality doesn't affect us personally, we are "the winners." It means we are on top of the hierarchy. /4
@jackfrombkln once said (correct me if I'm getting this wrong J.S.) "I'm not asking you to be ashamed of your privilege. Just use it to make a better world." For white men this couldn't be simpler. Use your power to help others gain equality. Do this and be free of shame /5
