THREAD: RELATIONAL IDEAS from The Relational Book for Parenting
Relationships have no starting point. Every relationship is informed by those that intersect with it and those that preceded it, even back across generations. We are born out of relationships into relationships. /1
Compassion, empathy, love, sadness, grief and loneliness; every idea, aspiration, plan, goal and product; every human belief and experience is co-created in relationships. /2
We are the product of thousands of relationships over a lifetime. How we relate in relationships creates who we are becoming. /3
Even as we walk alone in a park our relationships go with us. People we have not seen in years continue to inform who we are as we grow and change and reflect on our time with them. /4
Grandmothers and grandfathers who have passed on, childhood friends long gone; all remain a part of our growth and change. In this same way, parenting is not limited to the parent-child relationship. /5
Every relational moment, both good and bad, is rooted in the larger network of relationships we are all embedded in. Accordingly, to care for one relationship (the parenting or couple relationship), we must care for all of our relationships. /6
We live in a world that often focuses on techniques as solutions. Accordingly, it is rare for us to consider the difference between a technique and an intention, but this distinction is central to growing our relational intelligence. /7
Many capacities are mentioned throughout our book. They are all equally valid. Each is more helpful when held as an intention rather than a technique. As in, “It is my intention to be playful. It is my intention to acknowledge offers.” /8
Relational thinking helps us make the conscious choice to center our relationships. The fundamental moral premise we highlight in that moment is the difference between power created with others versus power created over others. /9
Joyous, authentic social connection has been shown to improve and prolong our lives. Power with others, located in communities of healthy, vibrant relationships, is where we find security, resiliency, connection and support. /10
Want to grow your famiy's relational intelligence? Our book, The Relational Book for Parenting, uses comics, fables, articles, and games to help families' grow their relational intelligence in the daily back and forth of parenting. /11
The Relational Book for Parenting is a joyful, accessible, parent-friendly cure for what ails our isolating culture, helping us to raise a generation of young people better able to connect, collaborate and innovate across differences. /12
